The Importance and Power of 1:1's ⚡
Your goal as a manager is to produce results and retain talent!
1:1s are vital to achieve both!
👥 Why do 1:1s matter
They are the direct line to your direct report.
They allow you to keep your finger on the pulse of what's going on in your team.
They provide a unique opportunity to
- Connect on a personal level
- Understand challenges
- Celebrate successes
- Align on goals
These moments can't be replicated in group settings or through emails. They are personal, direct, and incredibly effective.
1:1s should not be used for status updates. If you want to get a status update consider another channel.
🚫 The Cost of Cancelling
We all get busy, but consistently cancelling 1:1s sends a message that your team members are not a priority.
It can lead to feelings of neglect and undervalue, impacting morale, engagement, and ultimately, performance.
Try to keep them weekly for new team members and biweekly for more experienced team members.
Adjust based on the number of "ad-hoc" interactions you have with them during the week.
🔥 Have 1:1s or fight fires later
"A stitch in time saves nine!" as the old saying goes.
If you can detect problems early you can prevent them from becoming a bigger issue down the line.
Asking open-ended and probing questions during 1:1s can uncover coaching opportunities:
1. "What's on your mind?"
2. "Anything else?"
3. "What's the obstacle in your path?"
4. "What does a successful outcome look like?
5. “What do you need from me?"
💭 Reflective Quote: - Julie Zhuo in the book "The Making of a Manager." says it best
"The simple act of showing up for your team, listening to them, and giving feedback is more powerful than you can imagine. 1:1s are your chance to steer, support, and truly connect with your team."
